Brief Snapshot

  • Retain brick post-war bungalow with original features and a character to the front.
  • Make all existing bedrooms larger and ensuites to every room. Add another bedroom, rumpus, study, butlers pantry, laundry and master WIR
  • Improve the disconnected floorplan and make dedicated sleeping and living zones
  • Better indoor-outdoor flow to the backyard
  • Any extension to the rear or addition above should be contemporary in nature contrasting with the original.

Because the existing house had such a strong, authentic & original identity, we knew any replication would seem contrived. The clients understood the need to create a contemporary rear addition to contrast with the existing. In the addition, the living spaces needed to be located with direct access to the backyard. A second storey, (originally discussed as the upper part of a split level design) was to have a new master wing.

Lastly, increasing Bed-2’s footprint & changing the main to a 2-way private bathroom achieved half the brief with minimum disruption.

So that North light penetrated into the addition, the master wing needed Southern positioning however, without either reducing the grand stairs or compromising the size of Bed-2, there was no way to access it!

The master has backyard views, whilst the dressing room & ensuite overlook the upper tier of a two-tier courtyard. The lower tier is featured through the LGF kitchen splashback window. This courtyard was designed to bring in light, but also to reduce cost since the existing footings remain undisturbed.
